On James Mattis’ first day as Defense Secretary, he learned about bugs. A hacking team had discovered critical flaws in a tool the Defense Department uses to transfer computer files.

The team was part of a bug bounty program — expert hackers who are paid to find vulnerabilities in corporations or government agencies.

Pete Yaworski is one of 80 “white hat” hackers around the world who helped identify security issues in two of the DoD’s internal systems. The 32-year-old Canadian was on the DISCREET team at Synack, a security firm with a $4 million dollar contract to hack the Pentagon.

During the three-month project that ended in February, Yaworski and Synack’s team of hackers dove into critical systems to find vulnerabilities that could impact military missions overseas. Once the hacking began, it took just four hours to find important errors.

On Tuesday, Synack announced a $21 million round of funding led by Microsoft Ventures.

Unlik e some engineers who spend their careers dedicated to bug hunting, Yaworksi is a self-taught hacker who spends his days as a computer engineer for the Ontario government. At night, he works as a Synack contractor, searching for security flaws in targets like the Pentagon. Yaworksi taught himself information security by taking classes on Coursera, reading research papers, joining online groups and, eventually, writing a book on bug bounties.

stock market data: Vitality Biopharma (VBIO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Phil Saunders]

Vitality Biopharma, Inc. (OTCBB: VBIO) recent ascent as a strong small cap player in Cannabis pharma, is part of a boom in Cannabis-based pharmaceuticals making announcements about unique and innovative delivery systems being tested for such ailments as Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Crohns disease. But it is important to understand how the industry is evolving in the United States and Canada and what that might mean when realizing valuation and the evolution of government policies which still vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, making access to Cannabis and the pricing model still a big question moving forward.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

In mid-September, Vitality Biopharma Inc (OTCMKTS:VBIO) announced it was going to take aim at the development of an alternative to opioids as a means of treating pain. At the time, there was little doubt that the company’s cannabinoid science was capable of doing so. What wasn’t clear to VBIO shareholders was exactly how that might happen…. meaning what sort of drug might Vitality Biopharma come up with.

We got the first of what will likely be several answers to the question today. Per today’s press release, Vitality Biopharma intends to come up with a treatment for narcotic bowel syndrome, which is a severe form of (ironically enough) opiate-induced abdominal pain.

As a refresher, Vitality Biopharma was the name we introduced to you back on August 8th, pointing out it had developed a whole new way of making cannabinoid-based medicines. Their versions offer all the upsides of cannabinoids, but without the psychotropic (“getting high’) effects, and without some of the common downsides associated with these pharmaceuticals… like mouth and skin lesions.

There are even bigger advantages to Vitality Biopharma’s science, however. Namely, since these drugs are prodrugs and aren’t activated until in the body, they allow for targeted delivery to the GI tract (yet can also selectively target other body parts, even as far away from the GI tract as the brain). Perhaps more than anything though, these drugs are orally-administered by virtue of being highly soluble, making them easy to use.

It’s this nuance that makes Vitality Biopharma’s recently-announced intention so interesting, and compelling.

Studies have found that up to 81% of patients treated with opiates have functional bowel disorders, with more than half — 58% to be exact — of opiate users reporting chronic abdominal pain stemming from the use of their prescribed painkillers. Considering 200 million opioid prescriptions are filled every year in the United States alo

Are you an investor interested in learning more about Vitality Biopharma Inc (OTCMKTS:VBIO)? Or, are you looking to take your first look at VBIO? A SeeThruEquity research report posted in August not only has you covered, it underscores all of its hidden bullishness. The report also explains a very impressive target price for Vitality Biopharma shares. In short, the research outfit now believes the stock will see $2.00 per share sooner than later, based on its pipeline and potential market penetration. That’s 38% higher than its current value.

stock market data: ZELTIQ Aesthetics, Inc.(ZLTQ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

This week, Botox maker Allergan plc (NYSE:AGN) shelled out $2.5 billion for body-sculpting outfit Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc (NASDAQ:ZLTQ). The pairing is a nice opportunity for both organizations to cross-sell to one another’s customers. Allergan’s Botox customers seeking a more youthful face will also likely want the better body Zeltiq Aesthetics provides, and Zeltiq Aesthetics’ customers are natural candidates for Botox injections that Allergan facilitates.

The acquisition, though, is just a microcosm of a bigger trend that’s still picking up steam. That trend is, as the industry’s capabilities to restore youth, slim waists, whiten teeth, improve skin, and nip and tuck here and there improve with science, demand for these increasingly effective ‘tweaks’ is soaring. Names like the aforementioned Allergan, Cynosure, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYNO), Zeltiq Aesthetics and Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALGN) are all driving impressive growth. And, they’re all looking to expand their footprint in front of the rising tide.

Not every name riding this growth wave is going to be a large cap stock or a household name though. There’s a small cap stock called RepliCel Life Sciences (OTCMKTS:REPCF, CVE:RP) that could soon be turning a lot of heads not just of investors, but of potential suitors.

In simplest terms, RepliCel Life Sciences has two key sciences that serve as the foundation for three therapies and one medical device.

The first of the two biological premises is based on the company’s non-bulbar dermal sheath fibroblast platform, and currently includes treatments for chronic tendinosis and skin aging. The second is the company’s dermal sheath cup (DSC) cell platform for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness).

The three marketable products those two sciences are driving are RCT-01 for tendon repair, RCS-01 for skin rejuvenation, and RCH-01 for hair regeneration. The device is a dermal injector – currently categorized as R
