2012 Retail Stocks: The Week Ahead on Wall Street – FOMC Minutes, BLS Unemployment, and Monsanto Earnings

Tweet Market watchers will enter another abbreviated week before getting back into the swing of a regular work week. Barring any bad news from Europe, economic data and the?December Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes should keep investors on their toes this week. In Asia, market watchers will also keep their eyes on Europe and the FOMC’s meeting minutes but the region will produce some news of its own from their data releases. The week will also start out slowly as many of major stock markets are closed on Monday including Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney and Bangkok but one number will be released on this day:?manufacturing surveys from Australia, South Korea and India. 2012 Retail Stocks: Costco Solid Q2 Results unable to Counter Market Rally

Tweet Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) reported strong fiscal second-quarter earnings on continued gains overseas, growth in membership fees and higher gas prices. The company reported earnings for the quarter at $348 million, or $0.79 earnings per share as compared with $299 million, or $0.67 earnings per share a year earlier. The net sales rose to $20.45 billion, from $18.36 billion. This year’s results include sales from the company’s 50% owned Mexico joint venture, as it began consolidating its Mexico operations on a prospective basis beginning with its 2011 fiscal year. The company’s U.S. same-store sales rose 5% during the quarter, while international sales grew 12%. The company also benefited from climbing gas prices, which provided income through the gas stations that it operates at its store sites and strengthening foreign currencies had a positive impact on results.
