Best Stocks To Own 2012: Cavium Rising – Is the Story Still Intact?

Tweet Shares of networking processor designer Cavium (CAVM) are up $1.09, or almost 4%, at $31.66, reversing losses in the pre-market session, after the company last night warned its Q1 results will miss its forecast because of weakness among service providers and broadband network operators. Cavium said sales will fall 6% to 7% in Q1, versus an expectation for sales to be about the same as Q4, offered back on February 2nd. EPS is expected to be lower by 6 to 7 cents, which wipes out the prior forecast of 6 to 7 cents profit per share. Analysts had been modeling $56.4 million in revenue and 7 cents per share. As Cavium explained the shortfall, Sales in the service provider market were affected by continued inventory de-stocking, while sales into the broadband and consumer business were affected by delays in deployment of certain programs. However, one thing that remains clear is that inflation is coming to the forefront. No longer viewed as just a possibility, the latest consumer price index number, or CPI, illustrated just how much of an effect higher gas prices are having on overall inflation. After rising 0.4% in February, or twice that of January, the CPI number is almost guaranteed to bring in a more frightening reading next month. After all, 80% of the rise in the reading was attributed to higher gasoline prices, while food prices remained unchanged according to the report. Tweet First Solar Inc. (FSLR) surpassed the Zacks Consensus earnings per share (EPS) estimate of $1.76 by 4 cents to reach $1.80 in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010. It also exceeds the year-ago quarterly EPS of $1.65. The upside came from higher module shipments and lower module cost per watt. This was partially offset by reduced module average selling prices and increased expenses. However the tables tumbled on comparing with the sequential quarterly number of $2.04. The downside came from lower net sales and increased expenses, partially offset by higher gross margins. Operational Performance First Solar’s quarterly revenues were $609.8 million, down 4.9% from $641.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, falling behind the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $648 million.
