Investment Analyst Sam Frost joins Ben Nye in today’s video, taking a look at a couple of the biggest proposed deals of the year.
First up, NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI). A supplier of integrated circuits to both the auto industry and mobile phone industry, we thought the company’s leverage to automobile technology advancement and to the phone upgrade cycle made the shares attractive when we purchased the position. We still do. Now, however, we have been pleasantly surprised by the overtures made by Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) to acquire NXPI in an all-cash $110/share deal. What we can’t understand is why NXPI trades at a 8-9% discount to the proposed price. Sam and Ben discuss the reasons why this could be the case and the merger arbitrage opportunity the news represents.
Next, the pair take a look at AT&T’s (NYSE:T) apparently sudden decision to try to purchase one of the largest media companies in the world in one of the largest deals of the year. We are especially surprised at the speed with which the deal appears to be moving forward. Sam and Ben hit the high points before embarking on a wide-ranging discussion in which they talk about the “second-derivative” plays – what stocks benefit if this deal goes through. They are not a fan of T’s move here – but they do like the shares of another telecom giant, Verizon (NYSE:VZ).

Top 10 Tech Stocks To Buy For 2018: Amgen Inc.(AMGN)
- [By Ben Levisohn]
After years of rising and falling in tandem, the biotech sector is all about stock picking now. Credit Suisse analyst Alethia Young and team, for instance, upgraded Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN), and added Celgene (CELG) to its Focus List today. But Amgen (AMGN) wasn’t so lucky as Young cut it to Neutral from Outperform. She explains why:

Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) is expected to report its most recent quarterly results on Wednesday. The consensus estimates call for $3.00 in EPS and $5.61 billion in revenue. Shares closed trading at $160.41 on Friday, in a 52-week range of $133.64 to $184.21. The consensus price target is $185.13.

Gilead Sciences (NSDQ:GILD) has underperformed the market with its stock price down almost 25% compared to a 10.33% gain in Nasdaq Composite (INDX:COMPX) and 14.60% gain of Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDX:INDU). Gilead and Amgen (NSDQ:AMGN)have had a very tough year, so it is interesting to know if now is the time to invest in GILD stock, not from a bottom fishing point of investing, which is often too risky, but on some solid financial and fundamentals arguments.

Finally on Friday, Tiffany (TIF) reports, and Cramer is betting on positive news now that the company has an activist involved. He was also bullish on Amgen’s (AMGN) analyst meeting, saying investors should use any market weakness earlier in the week to buy.
- [By Johanna Bennett]
Shares of Amgen (AMGN) led the drop in the S&P 500 today falling almost 6.4% to close at $168.61 after the drug maker unveiledlong-awaited data on its anti-cholesterol drug Repatha.
Can shares of Amgen rebound from todays selloff?
Yes, is the answer from RBC Capital Management analyst Michael Yee. He argues that the drug makers share price can grind back up if access to Repatha increases over the next few quarters. Earlier today, Amgen released data from an outcome study that missed expectations, leading some analyst to predict that health plans will continue to restrict access to the drug.
As Yee writes:
A number of key developments midday at the ACC conference that should shed increased confidence that Repatha reimbursement and utilization will continue to increase over time driving a new growth driver for AMGN and increased confidence in a new product cycle. If reimbursement does start to open up over next few quarters (tracking IMS scripts and other datapoints) and AMGN manages their execution on quarters/guidance – stock should recover off today’s overreaction reflecting high expectations

Investors have turned to the pharmaceutical industry for solid dividend stocks for a long time. However, biotechs typically weren’t high on the list when it came to dividends. Over the past few years, though, Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) have risen in prominence as attractive alternatives for dividend-seeking investors.
Top 10 Tech Stocks To Buy For 2018: Nam Tai Electronics Inc.(NTE)
- [By Roberto Pedone]
Another stock that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Nam Tai Electronics (NTE), which is an electronics manufacturing and design services provider to a select group of the world’s leading OEMs of telecommunications and consumer electronic products. This stock has been destroyed by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 41%.
If you look at the chart for Nam Tai Electronics, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $6.05 to its recent high of $8.38 a share. During that uptrend, shares of NTE have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of NTE within range of triggering a big breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NTE if it manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.38 to $8.79 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 647,483 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NTE will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from April that started near $11.50 a share. If this stock gets into that gap with volume, then the upside is tremendous and we could easily see NTE hit $11 to $12 a share.
Traders can look to buy NTE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $7.42 a share, or below more key support at $7.22 a share. One can also buy NTE off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
