Royal Mail Plc, which traces its origins back five hundred years has been a member of the FTSE 100, the UKs index of blue chip companies, since shortly after being privatized in 2013, only narrowly escaped relegation in the most recent quarterly review this June. But could it now be relegated? Some pundits have ventured as much.
Todays British postal that was founded in 1516 when Henry VIII created a Master of the Posts was the darling of the stock market following its full privatization in 2013 and debut on the London Stock Exchange.
But after shares reached the giddy heights of £6.15 in January 2014 concerns have grown about its speed of restructuring, falling letter volumes and on-going negotiations with unions around closing its expensive Defined Benefit (DB) pension scheme.
These worries have contributed to the shares falling to £3.97 a pop of late, which equates to a decline of 20% year to date. And, since hitting the highs back then the share price drop equates to c.35%.

It is hard to fully wrap your hands around the potential market opportunity that Accenture will have in the years ahead but I believe that the opportunities are almost endless (dramatic, I know). For example, consider these forecasts that Forbes detailed in its “2017 Roundup Of Internet Of Things Forecast” report:
According to Bain, “B2B IoT segments will generate more than $300B annually by 2020, including about $85B in the industrial sector”. According to PwC, “$6T will be spent on IoT solutions between 2015 and 2020”. According to Accenture, “Industrial Internet Of Things could add $14.2T to the economy by 2020”. According to Statista, “The global Internet of Things (IoT) market is projected to grow from $2.99T in 2014 to $8.9T in 2020, attaining a 19.92% Compound Annual Growth Rate (OTCPK:CAGR). Industrial manufacturing is predicted to increase from $472B in 2014 to $890B in global IoT spending. Healthcare and life sciences are projected to increase from $520B in 2014 to $1.335T in 2020, attaining a 17% CAGR”.
The forecasts compiled by Forbes are all over the place but one thing is consistent, that is, the growth potential for IoT (and the sub-industries) is real. Connected things are expected to experience significant growth and I believe that it is hard to deny that digital will play a key role in the future growth of the global economy.

On a more positive note, Flannery appears to be making ground on some key long-term objectives.
Management feels “good” about the ability of the healthcare segment to outperform, according to Miller. Flannery claimed GE was in “active discussions” on some aviation platforms, current & lighting and distributed power, while an announcement on the divestment of transportation (rumored to be a target of Wabtec (NYSE:WAB)) is expected by the end of the second quarter. Structural cost reductions are now expected to be above the $2 billion target outlined on the investor day presentation in November 2017. Flannery outlined that he would lead the creation of a new operating system for GE based on “lean, six sigma ad agile” involving “continuous improvement and customer experience.”
As a reminder, GE has promised $20 billion of asset sales, and the commentary on the earnings call was reassuring, particularly as the first deal (healthcare IT assets) was underwhelming.
